From 9.00 p.m. AEDT 20/3/2020 anyone who is not an Australian resident, citizen, or close family of a resident or citizen will be denied entry. Residents already overseas wishing to return to Australia is recommended doing so as soon as possible by commercial means. Foreign nationals and returning residents who arrived in Australia before 9.00 p.m. AEDT on 20/3/2020 must immediately self-isolate for 14 days regardless of whether or not they feel ill.

There will be an extra screening of passengers at Australian airports to identify anyone unwell. At overseas airports, the Australian Border Force liaison will work with airlines to identify travelers who should not board flights. Australians must avoid all non-essential domestic travel.

On 15/3/2020 the Australian Government announced a temporary ban on the entry of cruise ships that have left a foreign port. Australian cruise ships that are currently in progress, are permitted to dock in Australia. All passengers and crew members who are Australian permanent residents and citizens that disembark must self-isolate for 14 days.

The following businesses are to be closed by midday: Pubs, Clubs, Casinos, Night Clubs, Cinemas & entertainment venues, indoor places of worship, auction & house inspections, indoor sporting venues & gyms, amusement park & arcades, galleries, museums, libraries, and swimming pools.

State and the federal government have enacted emergency power that gives them the right to fine and even jail people who breach the lockdown orders. Victoria has announced it is forming a 500- strong police task force to enforce social-distancing rules. Queensland has already been using police to check on people in isolation and an expanded police presence had been flagged in affected areas of New South Wales. The Prime Minister has previously warned it will be at least 6 months before things go back to normal.
